There has been no shortage of writings about Peter the Great. And that’s not surprising. After all, his reign became one of the brightest pages in Russian history. Despite ambiguous methods and ways of carrying out reforms, one cannot deny it: Peter the Great is one of the most prominent figures in world history.
Aleksei Tolstoy wrote: “A historical novel cannot be written as a chronicle, as a history. Above all, it needs composition, the architectonics of the work. What is composition? First of all, it is establishing the center—the center of vision.”
In Tolstoy’s novel, the figure of Peter I is that center.
