“Peter the First” by Alexey Tolstoy is one of the best historical novels—perhaps the most famous example of this genre in Soviet literature. A strong and ruthless reformist power, the era of Peter’s transformations in Russia—the great and tragic.
At the center is the fate of the Russian people: their calling in the world and the formation of a national character, with its virtues and flaws. Alexey Tolstoy began writing the novel in 1929; the first two books were completed by 1943. Work on the third book began shortly before the author’s death. He managed to carry the novel’s events through to 1704.
