When the somnambulist shared these letters with friends, they raised various objections: one letter seemed too ordinary, another—unbelievable. He replied that perhaps the fantasy during somnambulism sometimes confuses things, since it’s often influenced by our current ideas and sometimes deviates from the truth by laws that aren’t entirely clear. But when you compare the Chinese man’s account with circumstances we already know, it’s hard to claim he was seriously mistaken—because people will always remain people, as they were originally: with the same passions and motives. And yet the forms of their thoughts and feelings, especially their physical way of life, must undergo significant changes.
