In dusty workshops, bookbinders dry leather, sew pages—and help people forget. They listen to their stories and, word by word, transfer them onto paper, erasing secrets from memory and tucking them beneath the cover. Young Emmett leaves his parents’ home to learn this difficult craft. Under the supervision of an old binder-woman, he creates beautiful books with other people’s memories inside. The workshop becomes his new home—until one day, in a room Emmett didn’t even know existed, he finds a book with his own name…
