Description
Most of those who survived the horrors of the 20th century—whether victims of Nazism, Stalin’s forced-labor camps, or countless wars raging throughout that century—tried, as quickly as possible, to forget that terrible time and recalled past events with great reluctance. Most—but not Varlam Shalamov. Despite being deeply convinced that attempts to convey his memories, sensations, and feelings were futile and would never succeed—and even repeatedly warning readers that it’s not worth speaking or writing about this—yet in the 1950s–70s, in his tiny room near Moscow and later, after rehabilitation, in a communal apartment in the capital, he writes his short, crushing stories one after another in school notebooks. In this collection you’ll find an audio version of selected ones.
