Medieval Europe. Murderers and robbers—the brothers Grossbart set off on a journey from German lands to the south, fleeing the anger of local residents and hoping to get rich. For several generations, the Grossbarts have made their living by desecrating graves, and the brothers aim to glorify themselves and their ancestors by reaching the legendary crypts of Hypt. To get there, they’ll have to pass through dangerous and unknown lands alongside all kinds of travelers: merchants and killers, fallen priests and swindlers of every kind.
Only the world of the Grossbarts is at once familiar to us and infinitely far away: it’s the world of living saints and quite real demons, the world of monsters, madmen, and the plague—the world of werewolves, sirens, manticores, and creatures that are hard to describe and even harder to name. The brothers will learn that every legend has its own truth, and death is by no means the worst thing for those who set foot on the road to evil.
