In 1951, in postwar Norway—when there were still almost no televisions in people’s homes and their place was taken by the radio—a young actress, Anna-Katrina Westly, was offered to host broadcasts for the very smallest listeners: she had to come up with a funny little story and read it herself. From such stories, later, the books “the favorite grandma of all Norwegian children” took shape. But Anna-Katrina Westly’s books are addressed not only to children. It is surprising how gently, wisely, with truly maternal patience, the writer teaches fathers and mothers to be good parents. She teaches them to communicate with their children, to understand them, to make their children’s lives joyful and interesting despite all external difficulties. Today, when Anna-Katrina Westly’s stories are again heard on the radio for which they were once created, it becomes clear how relevant they are. As if we can hear the voice of Anna-Katrina herself saying to us: “Look how good it is to live if a person thinks not only of themselves, if they think about and care for everyone around them. It’s not difficult at all—and it’s very pleasant. Just try it!”.
