Description
In the spring of 1936, an uprising broke out in the Holy Land against the Jewish community and the British mandate administration. United families—once divided—city dwellers and peasants, the well-off and the poor, it became a test in which Palestinian identity took shape, but ultimately turned against the rebels themselves.

At that moment, Palestinians came closer to success than ever before, but the defeat was so severe that they never managed to overcome its consequences. In those same years, Zionist leaders began abandoning hopes of Arab willingness and saw a troubling prospect: the path to an independent state might require—perhaps inevitably and permanently—reliance on armed force.

The echoes of this uprising are still heard today: it not only casts a shadow over eight decades of the Arab–Israeli conflict—for Israelis and Palestinians, in a sense, the uprising continues.
