Anton Chekhov “Ward No. 6”—the story of a doctor who becomes a patient himself.
Work experience as a zemstvo doctor allowed the writer to describe the everyday life of the hospital, and the relationships between doctors and patients, with maximum authenticity. The text is full of bitter irony and a sense of hopelessness.
Chekhov’s novella inspired a great number of directors to film it and adapt it for stage productions.
“…Even just not understanding how such a simple, unassuming, quite poor-in-content story at the end grows into such an irresistible, deep, and colossal idea of humanity. <…> I’m stunned, charmed <…> Thank you, thank you, thank you! What a strongman you are!..”
