During the Soviet Union, “The Gadfly” was so popular that N. S. Khrushchev even issued a special award to the author for the book being republished many times. The work was spread by prominent revolutionary figures; many people in the USSR said that the novel “The Gadfly” was one of their favorite works.

At one of his confessions, the student Arthur Burton tells his spiritual father and mentor that he has become part of the revolutionary group “Young Italy.” The young man intends to fight for the freedom of his native country. The mentor cannot dissuade him, and some time later Arthur and his fellow party member are arrested. In “Young Italy,” they think Arthur has become a traitor, and Burton himself realizes that it was the priest who broke the secret of confession and exposed him. The young man feels that the entire world has turned against him—and the only way out seems to be to disappear from it forever.
