Description
“Fathers and Sons” is one of I. S. Turgenev’s strongest novels—its “problematic nature,” still relevant since the 19th century, hasn’t lost its sharpness.

The eternal conflict between youth, which demands change, and the conservatism of mature age...

The eternal confrontation of illusion and reality, intellect and emotions...

And finally, a[n] unusual, piercing look at the restless, mysterious soul of the Russian intelligentsia—in its most extreme, nihilistic form of spiritual life...

The novel “On the Eve” was written during an era of major socio-political changes in mid-19th-century Russia— the abolition of serfdom and the country’s entry onto a new, still uncharted path. New times, new life required new heroes. Elena Stakhova is a poetic embodiment of these new aspirations. Her vague wishes are transformed into an all-conquering love for a person whose nobility, moral charm, sense of duty, and drive for decisive action in the name of high goals lead her to fundamentally change her life. In the figure of the “raznochinets” Insarov, Turgenev saw a representative of the democratic intelligentsia, which, as he believed, was given the opportunity to achieve those aims.
