Negation of Negation

In the novel “Gluhomancy” (Muteness), Boris Vasiliev, author of well-known books about princes of Ancient Rus’, turns to the present. His characters live “there, deep in Russia,” where “centuries-old silence” reigns, yet they are not spared all the most significant events that shook the country in the 80s and 90s— the Afghan war, perestroika, the reshuffling of property… The story of the novel “The Denial of the Denial” unfolds in the period from the revolution of 1917 to the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. At the center of the narrative is the noble family of the Vyoreskovs, each member of which chooses his or her own path… The writer calls Russia a country of negation and tries to find the roots of today’s troubles in the past.
