A novel first published in several issues of the Frankfurter Zeitung newspaper in the spring of 1924, written by the well-known Austrian writer and journalist (1894–1939), became one of the most popular works in Weimar Germany.
The events take place in a hotel in the Polish city of Łódź, where gathered are soldiers returning home after the First World War, impoverished residents of the collapsed Austro-Hungarian Empire, ruined businessmen dreaming of emigrating to America, unemployed cabaret dancers, and other characters from the outskirts of Europe.
