Description
“Отчий край” is a novel by Konstantin Sedykh, the author of the famous “Dauria.” The book is devoted to the events of the final years of the Civil War in Transbaikal: the expulsion of the interventionists, the reunification of the Far Eastern Republic with Russia, and the return of partisans to peaceful life. A freezing winter is still followed by a blooming spring and a sweltering summer, then a cold autumn arrives—but with each year it becomes ever clearer that the old, familiar world has vanished forever. A new world is being born in the fire of battles. In “Отчий край,” the reader encounters once again the Ulybin Cossack family. In this book, the writer focuses not on the fate of the older brother, Roman, but on the younger one—Gan’ka: a teenager who joins a partisan detachment and, “as if torn from a tree leaf, is whirled and carried along in the torrent of an incomprehensible, formidable life.”
