Despair

At the start of World War I, German-born Herman was interned and, since 1920, lived in Berlin in a cozy apartment with his charming and loving wife Lida, helpful maid Elsa, a balcony on the sunny side, and central heating. The only thing that bothered him was the chocolate business—Herman’s hero venture—that no longer brought in the expected profits. Things have become even worse lately. One day, on a business trip in Prague, Herman meets a homeless drifter, Felix—so much like him that it’s as if they were twins. An ideal plan ripens in Herman’s head: kill Felix, dress him in Herman’s clothes, and thereby stage his suicide. Lida will receive the insurance money and come with it to the hero hiding in another country. But from the very first steps, everything starts to go off-plan.
