Goran Petrovich’s novel is magical realism, in which the characters move from the world of dreams into reality—and back again. In a dream, they can travel through time, encounter villains, hide pregnancy, and steal ideas. The plot unfolds in the 13th century, when Bulgarians and Cumans attack the monastery of the Holy Savior. The novel includes horrible attributes, dark mood, and bloodthirstiness, as well as images of mysterious characters reminiscent of the “forces of darkness” from modern fantasy. The narrative covers different historical events and figures, such as the capture of Constantinople by the crusaders and the fates of Serbian kings. The novel also contains elements of magic—for example, a man with a dried pumpkin from which darkness spills out. This work will suit fans of magical realism and can be considered historical fantasy or a philosophical novel.
