A vintage document—XV-century knight Philippe de Lalen’s diary—ends up in the hands of Kirill Rovny, an antique dealer living in modern times. That is where a dizzying chain of adventures begins, containing room for horror, mysticism, and a historical detective story. The antiquarian studies the manuscript, and strange—and sometimes outright terrifying—things happen in the city: his friend dies, decapitated dead people come back to life, and streets fill with crowds of zombies. And it looks as though the main target of the unclean is precisely Kirill. Together with a small group of interested people, he decides to conduct his own investigation and sets off on a very unusual and risky expedition.
And somewhere in the past, in the Burgundy town of Saint-Clair-sur-l’Aise, something goes wrong too: no news comes from there anymore, and all messengers sent to the town vanish. Knight de Lalen and a small army are sent into dangerous lands to find out what’s happening. Two plot lines are inevitably destined to converge into one in order to reveal the mystery of the vanished city.
