Olesya. The Wonderful Doctor

The story “The Wonderful Doctor” was written in 1897 and, according to the author, was based on real events. Literary critics note in the work signs of a Christmas story, since it reveals themes of kindness, mercy, and selfless service to people by the founder of Russian military-field surgery and the founder of the Russian school of anesthesia, Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov.

“Olesya” is one of A.I. Kuprin’s first works, where he appears before the reader as a great master of love—that mysterious gift granted only to the chosen ones. Just like the main heroine of the novella, the wonderful Polesye girl Olesya.
