Not everything in our recent Soviet past was as gray, dull, and hopeless as documentaries often show us, or as magazines and newspapers tell us from their pages. Besides lines and empty shop counters, there were also wonderful children’s poems and fairy tales—such as those presented in the collection “Oh and Ah and Other Stories.” Sadly, now they don’t write so deliciously and brightly anymore, and the Soviet legacy has been hurriedly thrown into the scrap heap.

But just thirty years ago, the fairy tales and poems “Oh and Ah,” “The Tale of Laziness,” “Orange,” “Alenka,” and “Vegetables” by Lyudmila Zubkova were read with enthusiasm by everyone, from the youngest to the oldest. Some of them were made into cartoons; others were published in children’s magazines and books.

We hope that the collection of poems and fairy tales “Oh and Ah and Other Stories” will give a second life to undeservedly forgotten wonderful works by Lyudmila Zubkova—especially since these are read by beloved actors: Sergey Chonishvili, Olga Budina, Anton Shagin, Andrey Martynov, Alena Babenko, Mikhail Gorevoy, Aleksey Borzunov, Alexander Bordukov, Alexander Klyukvin, Alexander Kotov, Lev Durov, and Veniamin Smehov.
