The novella was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1922. The main character, a teenager John T. Unger, studying at a prestigious institution, meets the son of very rich parents, and the latter invites him to rest for the summer at his house somewhere “in the West.” But getting there is so hard, and getting back out even harder....
“An enormous diamond like ‘the Ritz’,” published last summer in Smart Set, was written strictly for my own enjoyment. I was in a well-known state characterized by a desire for luxury, and the story was begun as an attempt to satisfy that craving with the means of imagination.
One widely known critic called this fantasy the best of what I’ve written. Personally, I prefer “The Offshore Pirate.” But let us be allowed to slightly distort Lincoln: “If you like such things, apparently you’ll like this one too.”
