This novel is a literary hoax that plunges into the dim world of demonology and fateful passions of the 16th century.
Before «Master and Margarita» there was «The Fiery Angel»—a literary hoax with an «adventurous element, astonishing adventures, and “devilry”».
The main heroine, Renata, obsessed with evil spirits, breaks the hearts of two men at once: the landsknecht Rüprecht and the young Count Heinrich. After meeting the fateful beauty, Rüprecht is drawn into a whirlpool of demonology, magical rituals, and flights to the sabbath (or was it a vision?), meets Doctor Faust, Mephistopheles, and the occultist Agrippa of Nettesheim.
The novel is based on a fantastic interpretation of the relationship between Bryusov and Nina Petrovskaia, as well as Andrei Bely. Presenting himself in the preface as editor and translator of an authentic 16th-century manuscript, the author provided the edition with detailed «explanatory notes,» emphasizing his extensive erudition in occult sciences.
