This story is often called one of the most vivid and dangerous adventures of the 20th century. Slava Kurilov, a professional oceanographer, wanted to see the whole world, but his homeland wouldn’t let him go beyond its borders. So on December 13, 1974, he jumped from the cruise ship “Soviet Union” into the open ocean near the shores of the Philippines. In three days, Kurilov swam 100 km to the island of Siargao, surviving by miracle. He was recognized as both a criminal and a hero. A criminal—for running away. A hero—for managing to make a breach in the “iron curtain,” and in essence proving to himself and the world that a person can perform superhuman deeds.
