At the center of the novel “One Year” are two heroes: Lapyshin, an employee of criminal investigation, and Zhmаkin, a repeat offender thief, nicknamed “Psych.” Lapyshin is a worker at the school of “Iron Felix”—Dzerzhinsky, under whose guidance, back when he was still a young man, he began his work in the Cheka. The writer sketches the image of a Bolshevik—deeply principled—an employee of investigative bodies who forever remembered Dzerzhinsky’s words about people of his profession: that these people must have “a hot heart,” “clean hands,” and “a cold mind.” All these qualities are embodied in Lapyshin.

The second hero of the story is the thief Zhmаkin, who fled from his place of imprisonment. The author narrates the difficult moral breaking of this criminal—something that happens not without the influence of Lapyshin. The process of this transformation is painful for Zhmаkin himself: a harsh, злe man, yet one who still retains a critical attitude toward the criminal environment into which he has been drawn. The novel is fast-paced, rich in details of everyday life. Psychologically, it is characterized by precise depiction of the atmosphere of the 1930s, the work of professional investigators, and the remnants of the criminal world of that era. Great work on re-educating people who have taken the Path of Crime continues even today—so the events described in the novel belong not only to history.
