Description
“The General Course of World History. Essays on the Main Historical Epochs” is a book by the Russian historian and sociologist Nikolay Ivanovich Kareyev. From 1910 he was a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (since 1917—of the Russian Academy of Sciences), and from 1929 he became an honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.

This work stands at the intersection of two disciplines—historical science itself and the philosophy of history. Kareyev’s main idea is that world history is not merely a sum of the histories of individual countries and peoples, but a process of gradual establishment of political, economic, and cultural relationships between the populations of particular countries—that is, a gradual unification of humankind, the expansion and deepening of ties formed between different countries and peoples.

Before the revolution, Nikolay Ivanovich Kareyev was known for exemplary gymnasium and university courses on history. Kareyev’s books have not become outdated to this day, noticeably surpassing Soviet and modern Russian educational manuals in quality and quantity of material.
