Description
A novel in which the author sharply criticizes the nihilism that existed in Russia in the 19th century. The main character of the novel is Boris Raysky—a painter who is eager to creatively realize himself in poetry, painting, and sculpture, and who intends to write a novel, but for all that never dares to seriously set about anything due to his lack of will. In short, someone trying to occupy himself with some “high” endeavor in art, yet never managing to put his thoughts into practice. A classic of the genre—lively Russian language allowed this novel to become one of the best in Russia.
