Cicero, called by his contemporaries the Father of the Fatherland, was fully worthy of that title. A committed supporter of the republic, a man who used his brilliant oratorical abilities to defend the law (and truth, as he understood it), Cicero left behind an enormous literary legacy—works on history, philosophy, law, and, of course, speeches. His writings offer insight not only into the author’s views, but also into an entire era.
