A treatise from the best stylist of ancient Roman literature
This collection includes two Ciceronian treatises devoted to rhetoric—“On the Orator” and “Orator.” In Cicero’s philosophy, close to Stoicism, the very idea of the art of oratory is inseparably linked to the personal and civic qualities of the ideal orator—the “true Roman,” brave and unyielding in the face of danger, and above all setting republican virtues highest. As for the form of these works, contemporaries already recognized it as impeccable perfection, and in later times Cicero was considered (and still is considered) the best stylist of ancient Roman literature.
