Description
In Jiddu Krishnamurti’s creative legacy, alongside his talks for a wide audience, a great importance was given to his numerous meetings and conversations with outstanding figures of science, culture, and art (Mary Lutyens wrote more about this in her books on Krishnamurti). Among his enthusiastic admirers and friends were famous writers, artists, teachers, psychologists, religious figures, philosophers, and scientists representing different fields of knowledge. Among these, by the number of meetings and the breadth of the issues discussed, one should single out David Bohm, a physicist known for his work in theoretical physics and quantum mechanics. Bohm’s contribution to quantum theory and relativity theory is widely recognized. His textbook on quantum theory (1951) was highly praised by Albert Einstein, who saw in it a classic work worthy of the Nobel Prize.

At the same time, Bohm was always interested in fundamental philosophical questions and their relation to physics—questions of space and time, matter and energy, cause-and-effect relationships, human existence and the cosmos.

In 1959, when Bohm was looking through books on philosophy and religion in the Public Library of the city of Bristol, he came across J. Krishnamurti’s book “The First and Last Freedom,” which seemed to him “extremely interesting.” In this work he found a deep understanding of the issues that concerned researchers in quantum theory, and in particular the problems of the observer and the observed—their relation. For example, one of the creators of quantum mechanics, the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, investigated the effect of the observer on a particle under observation. This issue also remained at the center of Bohm’s attention for a long time. In quantum theory, for the first time in the history of physics, an idea was put forward that these two concepts—the observer and the observed—cannot be separated if we want to understand the fundamental laws of matter.
