Description
Ernesto Sábato is an Argentine writer, a three-time nominee for the Nobel Prize. In his novel On Heroes and Tombs, magical realism intertwines with a detective plot and “Lovecraftian horrors.”

Alejandra shot her father. After that, she poured kerosene in the bedroom and set it on fire. At first, the tragedy was blamed on an outbreak of madness that plagued this noble family. However, soon a strange “Message for the Blind” was discovered—completed by the girl’s father on the night of his death. This is the manuscript of a paranoiac, but perhaps it will shed light on what happened and refute the theory of madness in favor of a darker one. If the version is confirmed, it will become clear why Alejandra did not use the two remaining bullets on herself, but chose self-immolation.

(From a police chronicle
published in the newspaper Rasón
on June 28, 1955
printed in Buenos Aires)

Everything was leading to this tragedy. A planted head of Colonel Acevedo, left in the Olmoses’ house as a family heirloom. The inherited madness. Martín, who fell in love with Alejandra and doesn’t want to let her go. And, of course, Fernando’s investigation. His obsessive thoughts about the blind, his many attempts to track down members of a secret society and uncover their terrible truth.

You’ll enjoy On Heroes and Tombs if you were left deeply impressed by Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude, as well as the works of Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortázar, and Howard Lovecraft.
