On a cold February morning by Lake Sagami—a favorite retreat spot for city dwellers—a man’s body is found. He was strangled with a hemp rope. The dead man is Takeo Doi, a Tokyo-based publisher of a professional transportation newspaper. Staff, business partners, and even rivals describe Doi as an honest, impartial journalist who had neither enemies nor ill-wishers.
The only clue is a mysterious girl who was seen with Doi the previous evening. The stranger never gave her name, said little, stayed inconspicuous, and later disappeared without a trace. Could she have strangled her companion and vanished under cover of night? Or has she also become a victim of an unknown killer?
