Postwar Pskov. During a large brawl, Arkady Zatsepin, an attacker for the football club “Trud,” is killed. The suspect detained right on the heels turns out to have nothing to do with the crime. The head of the operations department, Pavel Zverev, is certain the fight was arranged deliberately to kill the football player—and the reason is far from sport.
