Vladimir Markovich Ryvkin-Sanin (1928–1989) was a well-known Soviet writer-humanist, polar explorer, and traveler of Jewish origin, who took part in expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctica. A graduate of the Faculty of Economics of Lomonosov Moscow State University, his book “A Newcomer in Antarctica” consists of vivid and interesting firsthand accounts of how polar explorers live and work. V. M. Sanin had the chance to visit all Soviet Antarctic stations, witnessed and participated in many dramatic and amusing episodes, and got to know the life and everyday routines of Soviet and foreign polar explorers.
