French writer Marie-Henri Beyle (1783–1842), published under the name Stendhal, was one of the founders of the psychological novel. But alongside world-famous works like “The Red and the Black,” “Parm’s Convent,” and others, Stendhal’s pen also belongs to numerous biographies, treatises, memoirs, travel sketches, articles, and novellas—among which “The Italian Chronicles” became the most well known. Several of the author’s novellas are included in this collection.
