One of the best patterns of Belarusian classical literature. The work is included in the school curriculum.
My родны kут, як ты мне мілы!.. Забыць цябе не маю сілы!..
In the epic poem “New Land” (1911–1923), Kolas philosophically comprehended an entire era in the life of Belarusian peasantry at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, emphasized their desire to become masters of their own land. The characters and the richness of the heroes’ inner world are revealed through real everyday life, through labor, rituals, and traditions, and in relationships with other people. An important compositional role is played by exquisitely drawn pictures of nature, in which the author seeks and finds analogies with the fate of a person and with that of society.
The poem’s innovation lies in aestheticizing peasant life, poetizing labor, praising the spiritual wealth and moral beauty of the working person.
