Anatoly Makarov is a writer, translator, and journalist. He was born on July 12, 1940 in Moscow. He graduated from the journalism faculty of Moscow State University. In the 1960s he began publishing in the weekly “Nedelya”; with a special correspondent’s credentials of that publication he traveled all over the country… As a prose writer, Anatoly Makarov debuted in 1974 in the magazine “Youth” with a novella “The Man with an Accordion.” It brought him fame, was translated into many languages, served as the basis for a feature film (directed by Nikolai Dostal) and a theatrical production. Anatoly Makarov is the author of the novel “Living Space” (1989), novellas “We and Our Loved Ones” (1981), “Football in Old Times” (1981), “The Last Day of Summer” (1985), “At Night, at the End of Winter” (1985), and the play “The Last Masquerade” (1992). His works also include “Alexander Vertinsky. A Portrait Against the Background of the Time” (1998), stories, essays, and other writing. In 2007 Anatoly Makarov published the novel “Waiting for the Call”—a sincere and merciless one, written in the best traditions of Russian psychological prose. It tells about what was truly happening in Russia and in the souls of the people living in it over the last 15 years.
