Description
Francis Scott Fitzgerald is among the greatest American prose writers of the 20th century. In his novels “The Far Side of Paradise,” “The Great Gatsby,” “The Last Tycoon,” and others, Fitzgerald managed to express most vividly and precisely the mood of the “Jazz Age”—marked by grand optimism and a heightened craving for consumption—an age that ended in 1929 with the most severe economic crisis.

His novel “Tender Is the Night” was no exception; the writer called it “my favorite work.” The book is an astonishingly beautiful, delicate, and talented novel by a classic of American literature. It is a lyrical, elegant, and realistically powerful depiction of the life of one married couple: a psychiatrist doctor and his patient, who becomes his wife.

The residents of the French Riviera laugh and play with their own and others’ lives, turning out to be merciless and pitiless. And all this happens despite the fact that an atmosphere of light flirtation always prevails here, with an erotic haze; women are full of charm, men of nobility. But external attractiveness is deceptive and dangerous—behind it lies an inexplicable abyss of the human soul, suffering from unrealized hopes and, in essence, a life that has already been lost.
