I won’t get tired of repeating that the writer’s skill shows itself for me precisely in small texts, close-up distance, with short breaths. It’s a pity that our collections of stories come out more rarely than “big” novels—publishers are sure that stories don’t sell. That is, the reader, being sharp and demanding, won’t consume trifles. But I recommend the book by Ekaterina Zlatorunskaya.
First, there are many stories—and as in any collection, there are worse ones, there are better ones, but there are many simply magnificent, where both life and tears and love and literature and the author’s ability to see, in a short text, in a small story, how all our life is revealed like in a shard of a mirror.
Second, judging from her stories, Ekaterina Zlatorunskaya is not only a good writer but also an experienced reader—she skillfully works with different archetypes of Russian classics, and finding Chekhov or Bunin motifs and characters in a story is a special pleasure.
And third, it’s a worthy, not-at-all shameful debut—when the author comes not with some crazy 600-page opus, but with a compact, carefully assembled, elegantly written and intelligent book. How could anyone not be happy about that?"
