Description
In this edition there are two books translated by Vladimir Nabokov in 1920–1923: “Nikolka Persik” (“Cola Bruñon”) by Romain Rolland and “Alice in Wonderland” by Lewis Carroll. Having mastered both French and English since childhood, Nabokov early in his writing career took on two works that were equally difficult to translate and demonstrated a masterful command of the Russian language—reproducing wordplay, imagery, and the verses of the originals. In this respect, the translation experiments of the future author of “Dar” and “Ada” reveal the beginnings of his sophisticated literary style. “Nikolka Persik” was apparently the first Russian translation of “Cola Bruñon,” while “Alice in Wonderland” was recognized as one of the best Russian translations of “Alice.”
