“Want a mandarin?” a male voice asked behind me.
I turned around, but I couldn’t make anything out.
“No.”
“Well, don’t be capricious,” the man chuckled cheerfully. “New Year’s is ahead. People usually celebrate it with fireworks, champagne, and mandarins. Here—take it.”
He shoved something round and rough into my hand. I jerked my fingers away and dropped the mandarin—it rolled off somewhere. We both crouched at the same time and, in the darkness, bumped foreheads.
“Oh!”
“What’s your name?” the man’s deep voice sounded tender, and suddenly goosebumps ran over my body.
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Okay, no names. Let’s say you’re Marina.”
“And you’re a Mandarin?” I shot back.
“Could be. Marina, you want a mandarin?”
“Are you offering yourself to me right now—or a citrus fruit?”
