While Western philosophy has praised reason for centuries, in the East there was a proverb: “No thoughts—no problems.” Surprisingly, today, in a world that demands rationality from us, research in neuroscience also argues: thinking misleads us. And by the way, the very concept of “us” or “self,” of “one’s individual I,” is also a construct of reason—that is, something illusory, not existing in reality. What consequences does this idea have, and how can it free us from unnecessary worries and suffering?
