Russia is undeniably special—as Kremlin ideologues love to emphasize—but it’s hard to find at least one area in which that “specialness” points to progress and distinguishes it favorably from other countries. The history of the last one-and-a-half decades—from the frightening speed of deindustrialization to attempts to recreate the Soviet empire through a renaissance of ideology and religious worldview—makes it even clearer that Russia is consciously turning away from modernity and toward archaicism.
What needs to happen for the country to choose the path of modernization is difficult to say, but it’s extraordinarily important to create a systematic picture of the society we live in and the world that society is built into.
This book is an attempt to assess from what threshold the country will have to begin if it tries to fit into the modern world—and, to some extent, a warning about what all of us may lose if we do nothing now.
