The owner of the fine restaurant “Cosmopolis” in New York, Mr. Brewster, receives news that his beloved daughter Lucille is going to marry at a gallop—without his consent. In Brewster’s opinion, his daughter’s chosen one, Archibald Moffam, is a not-too-bright, worthless young man with no education and no job. But Mr. Brewster is forced to support him out of love for his daughter, all the while despising and humiliating his son-in-law. A complete optimist, Archie doesn’t despair and tries to build relationships with his son-in-law, landing in funny and absurd situations.
