An Unfortunate Woman

In the late 1860s and early 1870s, I. S. Turgenev wrote a series of novellas and short stories that bewildered readers, since at first glance there was no living response to pressing questions and problems of the modern age—so characteristic of the writer’s work. The plot situation of the novella “The Unfortunate Woman” (1868) is close to the situation described in a biblical story.
