Description
Leskov’s first novel did him a disservice: in the eyes of his contemporaries, one of the best Russian writers acquired a reputation as an extreme reactionary—almost an agent of the Third Section. The plot of “Nowhere” (“Nekuda”) is complicated and rather sentimental; at the center is the story of a young revolutionary, Liza Bakharieva, and her comrade Wilhelm Reiner—internally decent people, unlike most of their fellows. Part of the action takes place in the House of Accord, a commune where, instead of accord, a dictatorship was quickly installed.

The novel also includes the Polish Uprising of 1863, the execution of a revolutionary, and the modest Dr. Rozanov—an alter ego of the author.

The book is read by the popular theatre and film actor Mikhail Roslyakov.

“ This novel was written in a hurry and printed straight from scraps—often written with a pencil—in the printing house. Its success was very great. The first edition sold out within three months, and the last copies were sold for 8 and even 10 rubles. ‘Nowhere’ is the fault of my modest fame and the abyss of the most severe insults inflicted on me.

… This novel bears within it all the signs of my haste and ineptness. I consider it the honest work of my life—but I attribute its success not to my art, but to the faithfulness to the notion of time and people of the ‘comic era.’ ”

N. S. Leskov. On “Nowhere”

“As an artist of words, N. S. Leskov fully deserves to stand alongside such creators of Russian literature as L. Tolstoy, Gogol, Turgenev, and Goncharov. Leskov’s talent, by the force and beauty of his language, is only slightly inferior to that of any of the above creators of the sacred writing about the Russian land; and by the breadth of his coverage of life’s phenomena, the depth of his understanding of everyday mysteries, and the subtle knowledge of the Great Russian language, he often surpasses those named predecessors and comrades.”
