«The Minor» is the first socio-political comedy in the history of Russian drama, which gave Fonvizin the right to be called the «Russian Molière». Remaining a literary monument of the 18th century, it offers rich material for understanding the past as well as for realizing today’s pressing problems. «I don’t want to study; I want to marry,» declares a minor named Mitrofanoshe— the son of the landowners Prostakov. «So what can possibly come of Mitrofanoshe for the Fatherland?..» — less a question than a bitter regret for Russia’s fate. And everything would be sad, if only... it weren’t so funny!
