The Adventure of the Devil's Foot

A young Oxford University student, Edward Bellingham, buys a sarcophagus at an auction inside which lies a mummy. After a series of experiments he conducts on this priceless artifact at the university, strange things begin to happen. Several students are attacked by a wild creature vaguely resembling a human being, but possessing inexplicable abilities: it can climb walls with feline agility, and its hands are so strong they look like steel hoops.
Before long, a terrible accident happens to the owner of the Egyptian treasure himself: they find him unconscious near the open sarcophagus.
