Not All Is Shrovetide for a Cat

The “MediaBook” studio presents one of the best works of the great classic of Russian literature, Alexander Nikolayevich Ostrovsky—“Not All Is Rosy for the Cat” (lit. “Not all is laid up for the cat”). The work is included in the literature list for extracurricular reading for grades 8, 9, and 10.

The book is read by a popular actor and well-known voice-dubbing artist Sergey Gorbunov.

K r u g l o v a. And who’s to blame? Not me catching suitors for you, of course! Shall I set nets in the streets?

K r u g l o v a. And he might come—today’s a holiday; what’s he supposed to do at home? Here’s your suitor then—not me who found him; you pulled him in yourself. Where did you catch him from?
A g n i y a. Very simply. I was walking back from town, he caught up with me and walked me home. I thanked him.
K r u g l o v a. And did you call him in?
A g n i y a. For what reason?
K r u g l o v a. How did he show up at our place?
A g n i y a. I did invite him, after. Now he passes by our windows ten times a day—what good is that? Better to let him in the house. Only that praise.
K r u g l o v a. Of course.
A g n i y a. Everything to say?
K r u g l o v a. Yes, say it all.
A g n i y a (indifferent and crunching nuts). Then he wrote me a letter with all sorts of feelings, but it was terribly awkward…
K r u g l o v a. Well?
And did you reply?
A g n i y a. I replied, only in words. I told him, ‘Why write letters if you can’t do it? If you want to tell me something, you’d better say it straight, instead of smudging paper.’”
