Forty-five years ago, an experiment began at Stanford with a group of four-year-olds—convincingly proving that the ability (or inability) to give up immediate benefit and wait for greater reward determines, at the very least, our entire fate. Each child was given a piece of jelly and promised a second one if the child endured fifteen minutes and didn’t eat the treat. Seems like nothing particularly serious? But all the patient kids succeeded when they grew up, while the ones who rushed did not.
