Junas, Annika, and David are the most ordinary children in the Swedish village of Ringarud. In summer, they decide to pick up some extra work and volunteer to water flowers at the Selander estate—about which everyone in the area knows that an ancient curse has been laid upon it. One day, following the flight of a dung beetle, the children find in the house a mysterious small chest with old letters and learn the tragic love story of a girl, Emilia, and Andreas, a student of Carl Linnaeus, who brought an ancient Egyptian statue from an expedition over two hundred years ago.
