Arkady Averchenko (1881–1925) is a wonderful Russian humor writer, whose genuine mastery immediately won over his contemporaries—no accident that they bestowed on him the titles "King of Laughter" and "Knight of Smiles." Averchenko describes an anecdotal situation by exaggerating it and pushing it to complete absurdity—then gives the reader a healthy, cleansing burst of laughter. The main theme of the writer before the revolution was the vices of human nature; after the revolution, it was the contrast between images of old and new Russia. The book includes the well-known collections of stories "Wonders in a Sieve," "Unclean Power," and "Notes of the Simple-Minded."
